Electronic health records

Cliniko

Cliniko is cloud-based practice management software for clinics and allied health practitioners. It covers appointments, treatment notes, invoicing and payments, with other tools added through connected apps.

What it is

Cliniko is practice management software for clinics and allied health practitioners, such as physiotherapists. It is cloud-based and owned by its Australian founders. It covers the diary, treatment notes, invoicing and reporting, and connects to other tools through its connected apps directory.

Who it’s for in private general practice

Cliniko is built mainly for allied health. Its health record is a set of customisable treatment note templates and files, not a GP-style coded medical record. Its features pages do not list built-in prescribing or lab ordering. These come through connected apps.

It may suit a small private GP service that needs booking, notes and invoicing, with prescribing and blood tests handled by other tools.

Key capabilities

  • An appointment calendar with online booking, repeat appointments and automated SMS and email reminders.
  • Customisable treatment note templates, body charts, file storage, online patient forms and medical alerts.
  • Invoices, online payments, refunds, prepayments and expense tracking.
  • Performance and marketing reports.
  • Multiple locations and unlimited admin and reception users.
  • Connected apps, including UK private e-prescribing (SignatureRx, Healistic), UK blood testing (HaemoSync), AI scribes such as Heidi, and Xero.
  • An API for custom add-ons. Cliniko says data for accounts created in the UK is stored in the UK.

Pricing

Cliniko publishes its prices. In pounds, a subscription is £29 a month for 1 practitioner, £59 for 2 to 5, £89 for 6 to 8, £129 for 9 to 12, £199 for 13 to 25 and £259 for 26 to 200. SMS costs 5p per message. Admin and reception users are unlimited.

It offers a 30-day free trial and no minimum contract, and paying annually gives one month free. Connected apps may charge their own fees. The page does not say whether prices include VAT.

NHS integrations

None stated by the supplier.

Things to check

  • Whether the treatment note format meets your needs for a GP record, including coding, problem lists and medication history.
  • How prescribing works through a connected app, and what that app costs.
  • How pathology results come back into the record.
  • Whether prices include VAT.
  • How referral letters are written and sent from the record.
  • How insurer invoicing is handled, as Healthcode is not listed among its features.
