About us

Who are The Private GP Forum?

We have been involved in running a private GP practice for over 12 years. We share what we have learned so that you can make your private general practice a success.

Why we exist

Most GPs come to private practice from the NHS. The clinical work is familiar. Much of the rest isn’t: registering with the CQC, setting fees, choosing a record system and working alongside the patient’s NHS GP.

The Private GP Forum brings that know-how together in one place. We answer the questions GPs actually ask, in plain English and for the UK, and we keep the answers up to date. Hear from experienced private GPs and the people working to improve the sector.

Who it’s for

GPs at every stage of private general practice, and the teams who work with them.

  • Thinking about private work

NHS GPs, salaried or partners, and trainees weighing up what private general practice involves.

  • Setting up a practice

GPs in the months before their first patient: CQC registration, premises, indemnity and systems.

  • Running a practice

Private GPs and practice managers handling billing, compliance, prescribing and the NHS.

  • Growing

Practices taking on more clinicians, adding services or opening new sites.

How our content is reviewed

  • Every guide is reviewed by a practising GP, named on the page with the date it was last reviewed.
  • We check guides against UK sources such as the CQC, GMC, ICO and NHS England, and link to them.
  • We review each guide at least once a year, and our guide to choosing a record system every six months.
  • Systems profiles are factual. We don’t rank products or name a “best” system.
