What it is
Healthcode provides billing and data services for UK private healthcare. Its main service for practitioners is the Clearing Service, which sends electronic invoices to insurers and checks each one against the insurer's requirements first.
It also sells ePractice, a practice-management system, and runs The PPR (Private Practice Register), which holds practitioners' details for insurers and hospitals.
Who it's for in private general practice
It is relevant if your practice bills private medical insurers directly. If your patients all pay for themselves, the insurer tools matter less.
Key capabilities
- The Clearing Service, used from a Healthcode account, ePractice or other billing software.
- Find Member checks and pre-authorisation for insured patients.
- Electronic remittances and payment reconciliation.
- Self-pay billing and online payments with patientzone.
- The PPR, to store licence, appraisal and qualification details and apply for insurer recognition.
- Secure Messaging and healthDrive for sharing confidential information.
- APIs so other practice software can connect to the Clearing Service.
Pricing
At the time of review, the Clearing Service costs £9.20 per month per payee provider, plus a transaction fee from £0.27 to £0.54. VAT applies. ePractice costs £79 per practitioner per month + VAT (introductory price, £99 standard), or £149 + VAT for ePractice Pro (£199 standard). Clearing Service fees apply on top when you invoice insurers.
NHS integrations
Not applicable. Healthcode's services are for private billing with insurers and self-pay patients.
Things to check
- Which insurers do your patients use, and do they pay for private GP consultations?
- Do you need to be recognised by each insurer before you can invoice it?
- Does your clinical system connect to the Clearing Service, or will you enter invoices separately?
- How many payee providers and fee earners will your practice have, and what will that cost?
- When does the ePractice introductory price end?
