What it is
The Doctors Laboratory (TDL) is a private pathology laboratory. Its main laboratory is in London, with a second site in Salford, Manchester. TDL is owned by Sonic Healthcare.
TDL says its laboratories are accredited to ISO 15189 and regulated by the Care Quality Commission.
Who it's for in private general practice
TDL lists GPs, clinics and medical specialists among its customers. It suits practices that send samples to an external laboratory rather than using point-of-care testing alone.
Key capabilities
- A test menu across specialties including biochemistry, haematology, microbiology, histopathology, genetics, sexual health and tumour markers.
- TDL Collect: courier collection from practices. TDL states there is no charge for collections within the M25, and Inner London postcodes are covered 24/7.
- Postal pathology using Royal Mail Tracked 24 packs, for practices anywhere in the UK.
- Self-collect kits that practices can order for patients.
- eViewPlus: an online system to create request forms with a QR barcode and view results.
- Results by encrypted email, or a link to a practice management system that accepts HL7 data.
Pricing
TDL does not publish test prices. It does publish a charge of £4.68 for each Royal Mail Tracked 24 postal pack (at the time of review), itemised on the monthly invoice. Courier collections outside the M25 may also be charged.
NHS integrations
None stated by the supplier. Results reach your clinical system through TDL's own reporting options, such as an HL7 link.
Things to check
- Does your clinical system accept TDL results through an HL7 link, or will you use eViewPlus or email?
- What are the courier options and charges for your postcode?
- Which tests are unsuitable for postal return? TDL notes that some samples, such as coagulation, need to arrive within 24 hours.
- What will your account price list be, and how are charges invoiced?
- Can your patients use TDL's Patient Reception at 76 Wimpole Street, London?
